Using the Energia Board Manager
There is a useful explanation of the situation with the revision of the Launchpad board and the chips that were shipped with it. My launchpad board is a Rev.1.4 . Thus it does not have a hardware UART.
To access a local, different, version of the explanation navigate to Help->Reference and find Serial .
